Our Approach

At SheWorks, we utilize a globally recognized, grassroots plastic upcycling methodology. By establishing our own workspace, we are able to take control of local plastic waste, transforming it from an environmental hazard into sustainable economic opportunities for our trainees.

Operational Safety Protocols

Safety is the foundational pillar of our workspace. We adhere to strict guidelines to protect our team and trainees during every step of the upcycling process.

Operating the Machines

While our machines are designed for accessibility, they require respect and caution. All trainees and operators are required to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including safety glasses, heat-resistant welding gloves, and hearing protection.

Dangers of Heating Plastic

Temperature control is critical to our operation. Keeping plastic within its specific melting zone is entirely safe, but burning plastic releases harmful fumes. Our workspace utilizes strict temperature monitoring, and we mandate the use of carbon-filtered masks when melting plastic to ensure the air remains safe to breathe.

Types, Sorting, and Properties

Not all plastics are created equal. Before upcycling, our team is rigorously trained to identify, sort, and understand the precise materials we are working with to ensure quality and safety.

Plastic Types

Trainees learn to expertly categorize plastics using standard recycling codes. We separate waste into highly specific bins, focusing heavily on processing PET (1), HDPE (2), PVC (3), LDPE (4), PP (5), and PS (6). Proper segregation prevents chemical mixing during the melting process[cite: 3].

Water Density Sorting

To ensure pure plastic batches, we employ advanced sorting techniques like the float-test. Because water has a specific density, we can submerge shredded mixed plastics to separate them: HDPE, LDPE, and PP will float, while PET, PVC, and PS will sink[cite: 3].

Physical Properties

Shredder Machine
The Basic Shredder

The core of our plastic workspace. This machine slowly and powerfully grinds collected plastic waste into uniform, workable flakes, preparing it for the melting process.

  • Precision Engineering: Built using laser-cut steel parts for the shredding axes and hex blades.
  • Custom Framework: Welded, heavy-duty framework designed from exact technical blueprints.
  • Safe Electronics: Assembled with a dedicated, secure electronics box for safe operation.

This machine heats the shredded plastic flakes and plunges the melted polymer into custom molds to create detailed, solid objects.

Compression Machine
The Compression Machine

Utilizing an electric oven and a heavy-duty car jack system, this machine presses melted plastic into large, solid shapes like bowls, plates, and building materials.

Extrusion Machine
The Extrusion Machine

This machine melts plastic and continuously pushes it through a nozzle. It is highly versatile, used for making continuous beams, bricks, or wrapping plastic around molds.

  • Custom Nozzles: Interchangeable nozzles designed via CAD to create different shapes and thicknesses.
